The #fashion industry and #feminism are frequently at odds with each other, so this awesome Kenneth Cole ad took me by surprise. The copy isn’t just lip service; everything about the model’s pose is big and powerful. Her shoulders are squared, and her feet are firmly planted. Her legs are spread, but it’s not come-fuck-me, it’s I-dare-you-to-try. And the look in her eyes makes you think twice about suggesting she act more ladylike. Well done, Kenneth Cole. Well done.
Killing Us Softly. “A look at how advertising traffics in distorted and destructive ideals of femininity.” I think it’s absolutely vital for everyone— male, female, or otherwise— to watch this.
I’m not a feminist because…
…too many feminists spend their time ridiculing women who fall short of their feminist ideals rather than spreading messages of self-love and self-acceptance.
…too many feminists treat men with the same disrespect with which they claim men treat women.
…too many feminists are dogmatic in the belief that there’s only One Right Way to be a feminist; the women who came before me didn’t fight against centuries of oppression from men only to have me suffer oppression from my fellow women instead.
…I care about the rights of all genders.
